Meet Mary
Mary Foust’s journey into homelessness began in March of last year when she was wrongfully evicted from her home. She believes that the management unfairly targeted her because she was outspoken. Despite winning a case against them, she found herself without a stable place to live. Since then, she has faced an uphill battle navigating housing assistance programs, dealing with miscommunication between agencies, and experiencing repeated delays in securing Section 8 housing.
Throughout her time being unsheltered, Mary has struggled with the challenges of living outdoors, including exposure to harsh weather, lack of access to daily necessities like showers, and the instability of having to move frequently due to city regulations against encampments. She has, however, found support through the Topeka Rescue Mission (TRM), which advocated for her in her housing journey, providing transportation, clothing, and other essential needs.
Mary’s biggest concern is her health. She has a low immune system and cannot afford to be exposed to the elements for much longer. Additionally, she is eager to secure stable housing so her children can visit without being subjected to the hardships of homelessness. One of the main barriers to shelter options for her is her service dog, who is essential due to her medical conditions.
As she waits for the final approval of her housing voucher, Mary remains hopeful. She longs for stability, a place of her own where she can rebuild her life and reconnect with her family. Her story underscores the critical need for more affordable housing options and more accessible, low-barrier shelters that accommodate individuals with unique needs, including those with pets and medical conditions.
