Meet Penny

When Penny lost her job and could no longer afford rent, she found herself with nowhere to go. One night under a bridge reminded her how quickly life can unravel. But the next day she walked through the doors of the Topeka Rescue Mission and found safety, a bed, and meals that carried her through her hardest season.
In 2022, Penny was also battling lymphedema, which made working nearly impossible. Yet even in those struggles, God was writing a new story. At TRM, she not only found stability but also rediscovered her faith. A friend invited her to church, and soon she was going every week. “My pastor calls me Perseverance Penny,” she said. “Because I don’t give up.”
Penny graduated from classes at TRM, found work, and started putting her life back together piece by piece. She describes her time at the Mission as a turning point: a place where staff, friends, and volunteers stood in the gap when she could not carry everything on her own. Their prayers and encouragement helped her believe that setbacks were not the end, just “hiccups.”
Today, Penny is three years clean, employed, and living in her own home a home she calls “God’s house.” She shares her story openly to encourage others who feel hopeless, reminding them that there is always a way forward. For Penny, the Mission was more than shelter; it was a place of love, faith, and renewal. Her life now reflects what happens when people choose to love in the gap.
Thank you for Loving in
the Gap for Penny!
