Meet Emily

When Emily first applied to work at the Topeka Rescue Mission, she simply wanted a job where she could make a difference. What she didn’t realize was how much God would use her own story to touch the lives of others.
Emily grew up in church, but much of her teenage and young adult years were marked by battles with depression, anxiety, self-harm, and thoughts of suicide. In 2020, she experienced a powerful encounter with God’s love that lifted the weight she carried and set her on a new path. From that moment forward, she knew her life had been redeemed for a greater purpose.
At TRM, Emily found that her past pain became a bridge to others. “I can relate to a lot of what the guests have been through, especially in regards to their mental health and depression,” she shared. She’s learned that sometimes loving in the gap looks as simple as listening to someone’s story or handing them a cup of ice, reminders that they are seen, valued, and loved.
Though her work is challenging, Emily calls it the most fulfilling thing she’s ever done. “TRM has helped me grow closer in my own walk with the Lord,” she said. Today, she counts it an honor to serve alongside others who pray together, laugh together, and carry the hard things together, all for the sake of showing Christ’s love. For Emily, every act of service is a way of standing in the gap. “What we do for the least of these, we do also for Him.”
Thank you for Loving in
the Gap for Emily!
