Meet Billy

Billy’s life was scarred by years of addiction, brokenness, and despair. At his lowest, he stepped into traffic, ready to end it all. Miraculously, he survived. “When I woke up, there was a church that I knew around me and they were praying over me,” Billy recalled. That moment kept him alive, but the weight of his struggles was far from over.

In 2023, things collapsed again. Facing a distribution charge and the possibility of 17 years in prison, Billy felt completely broken inside. “I tried to attempt suicide again,” he said. Sitting in despair, he cried out to God for help. Once again, help came, and that moment became the start of a new journey. He entered treatment, received support for his mental health, and began to take steps toward stability.

Billy eventually came to the Topeka Rescue Mission, a place that had been in and out of his life for years, but this time felt different. At TRM, he discovered people willing to stand in the gap for him offering prayer, encouragement, and stability when he had none. “TRM has been a blessing to me,” he said. Surrounded by staff and volunteers who reminded him of God’s love, he found the courage to believe his life still had purpose.

Today, Billy is living in that purpose. He is sober, rebuilding relationships, and giving back to others who are fighting battles similar to his own. “I want to be there for someone else like people were there for me,” he shared. His journey, once marked by despair, is now a testimony of God’s grace and the power of a community that chooses to love in the gap.
