Open your mouth for the people who cannot speak. For the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Proverbs 31:8-9
At Topeka Rescue Mission Ministries, Proverbs 31:8-9 is more than just a verse we admire—it’s a deep part of who we are as an organization. These words challenge us not only to be kind and compassionate but also to be courageous. In the stories we hear and the brokenness we witness, we are reminded that empathy alone is not enough. We are called to act.
One way you can help us stand and love in the gap is by joining us for our Third Annual Night of Praise on Friday, September 12, at 6:30pm at Fellowship Bible Church. We hope you will join us for an evening of worship, testimonies, and vision as we come together to declare God’s goodness and remember our call to love and serve the vulnerable.
Loving in the Gap
This year, our theme has been Standing in the Gap = Loving in the Gap, and this theme has helped shape the way we are showing up for people. It means stepping in when it’s uncomfortable. In other words, to love people not from a distance, but right in the middle of their hardest moments. We believe every person has value, has a story, and is worthy of being seen, heard, and fought for. When we choose to stand in the gap, we reflect the heart of Jesus—and we live out what it means to truly advocate for the lost and broken.
There’s something powerful that happens when the Body of Christ comes together—not just one church or ministry, but the collective Church, united in worship. For the past two years, we have seen it firsthand, and we’re excited to do it again this fall. Since we started our Night of Praise event, our desire has been simple: In a world often marked by division, this night is a glimpse of what heaven will look like— diverse people, united in praise and purpose, worshipping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
While this night is hosted by TRM, it’s really about spotlighting Jesus and the work the Holy Spirit is doing across our city—especially in the lives of those who feel forgotten, overlooked, or broken. This gathering is our way of saying, “We are in this together.” Together in worship. Together in advocacy. Together in the gap.
This year’s Night of Praise: Loving in the Gap will bring together a conglomerate of musicians from churches across Topeka. By coming together from different denominations, we believe that we will create a rich and meaningful experience that reflects the heart of Christ and the fullness of the Church. No matter your worship style, the heart will be the same: glorifying God, lifting our voices together, and creating space for the Holy Spirit to move.
Night of Praise is not only about worshipping the Lord through music; it is also about worshipping Him through transformation. Throughout the evening, we will hear real stories from individuals whose lives have been radically changed through the work God is doing through TRM. It will be a powerful night of honest, raw, and heartfelt testimonies which point to the redemptive power that only Jesus can bring. We will also have time to pray together as one Body and reflect on the ways we can continue standing in the gap together, whether through volunteering, financial or material donations, prayer, or whatever else the Lord puts on His people’s hearts.
Why It Matters More Than Ever
If you have been following the work we have been doing at TRM, you know the need in our city continues to grow. Families are staying in our shelters longer than ever before, and more guests are showing up with past trauma that runs deep. More single mothers, veterans, and lost and lonely individuals walk through our doors every day with nowhere else to go. We say this not to discourage, but to highlight why Night of Praise matters so much because it is more than an event. It is a call. A call to listen. A call to act. A call to advocate.
We say this because we believe Topeka and far beyond is more than capable of rising to the call to advocate for the lost and broken. We have seen it already in the way you have prayed, served, and stood beside us, and we believe what God has started, He is not done with it yet.
So, will you join us? Will you be a part of the movement in what God is doing in Topeka? Let this month’s newsletter be an invitation for you to show up with an open heart, ready to celebrate, eager to worship, and willing to respond.
Whether you have been a part of the TRM family for years or this is your first time hearing about this event, we want you there. Bring your family and friends. Invite your neighbors. Invite your church. Let’s pack Fellowship Bible Church out—not for us, but for the glory, honor, and power of God.
