TOPEKA RESCUE MISSION MINISTRIES
Ministering to those in need by bringing help and hope through sheltering and serving the homeless and feeding the hungry.
SHELTERING AND SERVING THE HOMELESS
On average, TRM Ministries provides shelter to between 140 to 160 unique individuals every night.
We strive to provide a safe, comfortable and hospitable shelter for individuals in transition from homelessness to permanent housing. People come to us from a variety of backgrounds and for a variety of reasons, but they all share one thing in common: they have no where else to go.
We offer a broad range of training programs for our guests to help them get back into the work force, as well as addressing potential lack of education or other issues that led to loss of employment.
Our program participants engage in work detail, job training, spiritual training and goals such as time management, money management, personal assessments, and other goals designed to help them in their physical, mental, and spiritual development.
While slavery involving race was abolished 150 years ago, sex and labor slavery exists today in communities across America and even in our own community. We understand that it hides in plain sight, exploiting the most vulnerable.
Our guests are some of the most vulnerable in our community. Systemic problems in society often create vulnerabilities that may lead to homelessness, substance abuse, incarceration, exploitation and human trafficking. Our mission is to offer supportive services and restoration as individuals journey toward hope and healing.
REACHING THE UNSHELTERED
Street Reach locates campsites and unsheltered homeless in the Topeka area and provides food, water, winter and summer gear, and an introduction to TRM Ministries and how we can help.
Since its inception, Street Reach has successfully partnered with numerous agencies and churches within the community to assist unsheltered individuals with housing, substance abuse treatment, mental and physical health services, food, clothing and other services. If you see someone who needs help from our team, please call our hotline at: 785-230-8237
This May TRM begins a new initiative alongside Valeo, Stormont Vail and the Topeka Police Department to engage with the unsheltered homeless in the Topeka area. The Mobile Access Partnership (MAP) program will focus on getting services out to people who need them in our community and are unable to come to TRM to receive services.
These services will provide mobile bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities, a mobile health clinic, a mobile food pantry and kitchen, among others.
FEEDING THE HUNGRY
TRM Ministries Food Services is responsible for the planning, preparing and serving on average 24,000 meals per month in our dining room 7 days a week. The food served consists primarily of food donations from the community.
TRM guests are invited to our dining room three times a day to receive a hot, nutritious meal or sack lunch.
COMMUNITY FOOD DISTRIBUTION
In 2020, we provided our community with approximately 450 sack lunches and 2,000 food boxes weekly. Anyone is welcome to come to us and receive food.
In addition to weekly food distribution from Operation Food Secure, we hand out food boxes to the community every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m at our Distribution Center, located at 401 NW Norris.
Operation Food Secure is an initiative of TRM designed to strategically address food insecurity in Northeast Kansas through “neighbors helping neighbors”. Recognizing that we can go farther together, OFS built a network of over 70 churches, nonprofits, tribes, and neighborhood improvement associations to distribute boxes of fresh produce, cheese, and dairy products from the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program.
